Tongan Language Week

I have learned at least one new thing about Tonga and one new Tongan phrase.

1. Choose a Tongan Phrase and create a poster on a piece of A4 with the Tongan phrase and the translation to decorate the classroom. 

   1. • Malo e lelei - Hello

      • Malo e tau lava - Hello (formal)

      • Mālō ʻEtau Maʻu e Pongipongi ni - Good Morning

      • ʻOku talitali lelei koe - Welcome

      • Ofa keke maʻu ha ʻaho lelei - Have a great day

      • Fēfē hake? - How are you ?

      • Saipe mālō - Good, thank you

      • Nofo ā - Goodbye (to someone staying)

      • Alu ā - Goodbye (to someone going)

6. Facts about Tonga 

   1. • Tonga’s national motto is ‘Koe ‘Otua mo Tonga ko hoku tofi’a’ which means ‘God and Tonga are my Heritage’.

      • Tonga is a constitutional monarchy which means it has both a government and a royal family. It is the only Pacific country with a constitutional monarchy known officially as the Kingdom of Tonga.

      • The main religion in Tonga is Christianity. This is reflected by the cross and the colour red on the Tongan flag.

      • Tongans wear a mats around their waists called Ta’ovala as a sign of respect. There are different types of ta’ovala depending on the occasion.
